Mallorca Day, September 12th
the reconquest from the occupying Arabs
The island has celebrated what has become known as Mallorca day on September 12th every year since 1997. The date is significant for two reasons, firstly, in 1229 the Christian forces under King Jaume I landed in Santa Ponsa to begin the reconquest from the occupying Arabs and in 1276 on that day, King Jaume II pledged the Charter of Liberties and privileges to Mallorca.
The day is most famously marked by the appearance of the 'giants' in Palma de Mallorca, dancing and parading through the streets, but there are a whole lot more activities planned too.
Here are the most suitable for tourists visiting the island.
