The Big E in Palma
The gigantic US aircraft carrier the USS Enterprise is currently anchored off Palma while its crew partake of some R and R Mallorca style. The nuclear powered craft, the 8th to bear the name Enterprise has been in the Middle East recently and is stopping off in various ports on its way home.
With around 6000 marines the visual impact on the city has been enormous but shopkeepers, bar and restaurant owners are a little disappointed that the expected windfall in extra trade hasn't materialised. It seems that the Euro is so strong against the Dollar that the Yankees think even a bottle of beer is too expensive!
A fleet of buses has been laid on to shuttle the marines back and forth to Magaluf beach and a team of 13 volunteers went up to Petra to clean up and maintain the Church of Sant Bernardi and the museum dedicated to Fr Juniper Serra, the monk who founded the American cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.
