Mallorca wine goes gold

First prize for Can Feliu bodega

A Mallorcan wine producer has won the gold medal first prize for one of its wines at the prestigious 'Concurso Mundial de Bruselas' (Concours Mondial de Bruxelles) which was recently held in Valladolid. The wine, Alè de Cabernet 2014 from the Can Feliu bodega in Porreres, scooped the award ahead of around 9,000 other wines from all over the world.

Conditions for the tastings in the comp were pretty stringent to say the least as 320 experienced wine tasters selected the winners of each category in blind tastings where levels of luminosity, hydrometry and temperature were strictly controlled. Each wine was evaluated using the same criteria; clarity, visual appearance, olfactory intensity, honesty, intensity, and persistence of taste, and Alè came out tops!

Naturally the owners of the bodega, brothers Xavier, Carlos and Juan Feliu, are really pleased as it vindicates their efforts in reviving an old family business which was established in 1796 but ceased in 1893 when the filoxera infection decimated the vines. The brothers restarted production in only2004 using only ecological methods so the gold shows just how well they've done.

If that wasn't good news for we wine consumers, there's even better news for holidaymakers in search of peace, tranquillity and the 'real' old traditional Mallorca because the bodega is also an Ecoagrotourist hotel where you can stay and see first hand how the wines are produced.

Set in beautiful countryside, the hotel is a typical old farmhouse decorated in traditional style with a really relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by fields where animals graze – cattle, pigs, ostriches – it is rural haven and a chance to get-away-from-it-all in Mallorca.
