Cala d'Or, Mallorca - a touch of Ibiza
Clustered around several sandy coves Cala d’Or is quite unique in Majorca. Why? In the 1930’s a Spanish architect designed a number of low level white washed villas that followed the style of architecture in Ibiza, giving the previously small fishing village an unusual look.
Beloved of artists the village was discovered by tourism and grew along the coast encompassing the three large coves.
This resort is perfect for everyone; families will love the choice of beaches, couples will enjoy the upmarket shops and restaurants whilst even the young and young at heart can enjoy themselves at the small selection of lively bars and discos.
Cala Llonga is the largest of the 3 main beaches and here is where you’ll find a classy marina filled with expensive yachts. You can hire boats for the day here, or enjoy one of the boat trips to nearby beaches (there are around 8 coves in total). The heart of the resort though is around the pedestrianised area where the majority of cafe bars, shops and restaurants are to be found.
If you’re staying in the resort don’t miss the opportunity to visit a fabulously stunning beach. Es Trenc can be reached by bus (leaves early morning, returns late afternoon) from Cala d’Or and is a natural white beach that stretches far into the distance and is lapped by turquoise waters.
Cala d’Or is quite spread out because it has grown around the calas (coves) so a top tip would be to make sure you are where you want to be in the resort when booking your accommodation to save long walks. Having said that, a favourite way of getting about is by bike and the resort is loved by cyclists. If you want to explore the easy way though – just jump on the little tourist train and discover things at a leisurely pace!
