Puerto de Pollensa, Mallorca (Port de Pollença) - pretty resort with elegant marina
With a dramatic backdrop of the Tramuntana mountains and nestled in a sheltered horseshoe shaped bay is the pretty resort of Puerto Pollensa.
Situated at the opposite end of the wide bay from the larger resort of Alcúdia, it’s golden sand that shelves gently into the sea is a huge draw for families as is the fact that the resort is, in the main, pedestrianised, so creating a safer environment for children. But a big plus by far is that parents can enjoy an evening meal at one of the many beachside restaurants whilst the kids play safely on the beach within full view! How relaxing is that?
Originally a fishing village, this popular town still retains a nautical air with a lovely marina filled with smart yachts. The newer part of the resort stretches out along the promenade which backs the wide sandy beach; lively by day and a popular strolling place in the early evening there are a number of good open air cafe bars where you can relax over a coffee whilst watching the ‘Pollensa’ world pass by.
Across from the marina, the characterful old Town is a mix of narrow streets lined with bars, restaurants and shops providing the perfect place to spend an evening soaking up the atmosphere, particularly in the main square where you get a mix of locals and holidaymakers.
For shopping opportunities – there’s nothing better than the weekly market held in the main square each Wednesday. Throw yourself into the hustle and bustle of market day and hunt around the stalls – many with local crafts and produce.
Spotlight Tip: Try the ‘Pine Walk’...where you can stroll along under the shade of the large pine trees whilst looking at the marvellous old properties on one side, whilst the kids run along the beach on the other. It’s popular in the evenings when the more energetic go the whole length from the marina, past the pavement cafes and to the wonderfully genteel Hotel Illa d'Or.
Pollensa: The actual town of Pollensa is approximately 8 km inland and is easily reachable by bus. It has an immediate charm with its natural stone houses, narrow streets and of course, the famous Calvari Steps leading up to the hilltop chapel.
It’s quite an upmarket, arty place with plenty of art galleries, jewellery shops, leather retailers and quite superb restaurants. Each Sunday there is also the weekly market which a great way to experience the town – although many of the main shops will be closed then.
Evenings in the town are described as magical – so if you can make it there for a special meal or maybe a late evening shopping expedition you should see the town at its very best.
