Puerto de Andratx, Mallorca (Port d'Andratx) – a former fishing village
In days gone by the little fishing port of Puerto de Andratx served the main town of Andratx situated some way inland as a protection from pirates. Nowadays fishing has ceased to be the main activity here, but you can still see the catch landed in the afternoons.
Tourism is now king in Puerto de Andratx, but because the village has no beach, the area escaped the mass tourism developments and big hotels of the package tour era.
Its population trebles in the summer months thanks to the large numbers of people who own holiday homes in the hills rising up from the port and a small number of individual hotels frequented by independent travellers.
The new harbour area which has moorings for hundreds of pleasure craft is the focus of Puerto de Andratx. There's a cosmopolitan atmosphere in the low key bars and restaurants with terraces overlooking the glistening water and bobbing boats. No wonder that top class Cafe Bar company Cappuccino chose it as a venue for a new cafe.
Most daytime activity involves boating or water sports but the nearest beach is at Camp de Mar, just 3 kilometres away. Golfers will also find a course here, while the mild winter 'micro-climate' of the area ensures that horse riding, cycling, and hiking are all available year round here.
As a base for a holiday Puerto de Andratx has good transport links with Palma via a good road and a frequent bus service. Nature lovers will be interested in a boat trip to the nearby natural park of Sa Dragonera, an island bird sanctuary so named because of the large numbers of lizards and geckos to be found there.
