Santa Ponsa, Mallorca (Santa Ponça) - shallow bay with wonderful beach

If you’re Irish or Scottish you’ll feel right at home here! Unusually Santa Ponsa has developed a reputation for its Celtic theme helped by the many Irish and Scottish bars and restaurants which have opened up over the past few years.

Today this is a resort popular with families due to a wonderful beach that shelves into a shallow bay and its ‘home from home’ atmosphere. However it also has an important place in Majorca’s history as King Jaime disembarked in Santa Ponsa on Sept 10th 1229 to conquer the island from the Moors after more than 300 years of Muslim domination. The spot, at the entrance to the Marina, is now marked by a cross.

The beach has all the usual facilities; water sports, pedaloes, banana rides. 15 minutes walk from the Avenida Rey Jaime 1 is Santa Ponsas second beach, a pretty little cove that is less crowded in the high summer months. The small Marina hosts a number of daily boats trips that transverse the South Cast but it’s also a great place to stroll to in the early summer evenings to watch the yachts coming in from their day trips.

Evenings are very much family orientated. In the summer months (May – October) the Square in Santa Ponsa comes alive with singers, musicians and all round entertainers every night. Starting at 8pm each evening the early entertainment focuses on the children, so parents can relax at a nearby bar whilst the kids boogie away at their own ‘disco’. Later the acts are more adult orientated with tribute bands and singers.

Restaurants are plentiful in the resort and everything from traditional pub grub to Mexican, Indian or tapas. For those self catering there is a good range of known brands in the supermarkets along with local produce.

One of the biggest fiestas in Majorca (Rey en Jaume Fiesta) happens here the 2nd Sunday of September and commemorates the landing of King Jaime and his knights. The fun includes a mock battle, flamboyant parades and Medieval themed market stalls.
