Stunning is an overused word and yet it is almost inadequate when describing this beach location.
Best approached from the sea for the more nervous amongst you, as to get to it by land involves a drive down a steep narrow road with hairpin bends - so not for the faint-hearted!
What you reach after all this effort is the pebble beach of Sa Calobra which pokes out between two huge cliffs giving it the simply the most breathtaking position of any beach on Majorca. Approached from the road (parking at the small port) you walk through a tunnel between the cliffs from the Port of Calobra, by boat you are dropped off near the beach.
The Torrent (see photo) that backs the beach is fabulously spectacular, the mountain range looms over you acting like a protector of the way to the sea. Walking the length of this beautiful gorge is best left to experienced hikers who can scramble up the hillside and come out at the Restaurant de Escorca (allow 4/5 hrs one way) but it will be enough for most visitors to walk a short way into the ‘torrent’ in order to feel the magnificence of its location.
Our recommendation would be to always visit on calm days as the sea can get very rough here and crash through the gorge making Sa Calobra inaccessible. Also avoid after heavy rain when flash floods can occur in the Torrent due to the volume of water from the two rivers that meet there and again make it inaccessible.
Facilities: A completely natural beach however limited facilities can be found at the little port.
How do I get there? Follow the sign posts out of Sóller which take you towards Lluch. As you climb to the top of the mountain you pass through a tunnel bringing you to the Blue Gorge (worth a stop). Drive further on until you see a signpost on the left for the road down to Port de Sa Calobra (approx 14 km). Park at the Port (a pretty place in itself) and walk through the tunnel to the beach.
