America's Cup for Palma?

The most prestigious yachting event in the world, the 34th America's Cup

The most prestigious yachting event in the world, the 34th America's Cup looks like it could be on its way to Palma. At the moment with nothing officially confirmed, everything points to San
Francisco, California, as being the host city in 2013 with a budget of $270 million to provide the facilities.

However several events will be held in other maritime cities and the name of Palma de Mallorca has been pencilled in. The city's Chamber of Commerce are in talks with the USA's team BMW Oracle to
hold three events in return for €5 million.

If all goes to plan there'll be an event each year, 2011, 2012 and 2013 sometime between May and July – August is out because the King's Cup takes place then – which would bring in substantial
numbers of visitors to the city. The investment of €5 million would probably be repaid many times over in all the extra money in hotel bookings, restaurants, shops and mooring fees – space has to
be made in the harbour for 50 megayachts – so let's hope Palma hosts these events.
