The importance of the great outdoors to Mallorca's tourist industry
The importance of the great outdoors to Mallorca's tourist industry has just been underlined by the tourist authorities and hotel association. In a conference they revealed that around 90,000
cycle-tourists will visit the island during the months of March, April and May.
They're attracted by the climate, good roads, a variety of landscapes from flat to mountainous and well marked tracks for off road biking. Whilst 90,000 is a drop
in the ocean compared to the millions of tourists who visit Mallorca annually, there are two good reasons why they are important; they spend an average of 15% more than 'sun and sand' tourists and
they help hotels do more business in the off season.
Equally as important to the economy are the golfing and hiking fraternities who also visit the island in large numbers – about 100,00 golfers and 150,000 walkers each
year, and again mostly in the off season. The autumn and spring months see the roads and tracks of the Sierra Tramuntana region around Soller brimming over with folk getting a healthy dose of fresh
mountain air in their lungs.
