For the first time in many years the population of Palma has decreased. It's believed that the small decrease of 4,609 this year from 426,526 in 2010 to 421,917 is due to the economic situation
which has caused many South American immigrants to return home.
The net decrease encompasses the return of many thousands of Ecuadorians, Colombians, Bolivians and Argentinians to their own countries while there has been a slight increase in the number of
European citizens – mostly German, Italian and British – making Palma their home.
For the last few years the city has witnessed quite spectacular rises in population and only ten years ago it was 20% less at 346 thousand people!
