Mallorca Anti Drink Drive Campaign

Christmas is coming and like in the rest of Spain, local police in Mallorca are conducting a campaign

Christmas is coming and like in the rest of Spain, local police in Mallorca are conducting a campaign against drinking and driving on the instructions of the national traffic authority, the DGT.

Last weekend alone the police found 3 drivers in Palma who were so drunk that they were actually asleep at the steering wheel in their cars. Patrols found a 56 year old Ukrainian man who had fallen
asleep whilst waiting for traffic lights to turn green and was 4 times over the limit. A 47 year old German was found snoozing on one of the main roads, 4 times over the limit and surrounded by
empty beer cans and finally a 44 year old Spanish man, 5 times over the limit, was asleep at traffic lights.

Fortunately, this is the 'funny' side of drink driving but obviously there can be much more serious consequences for both drivers and innocent victims. The laws in Spain allow only 0.5 milligrams
of alcohol per millilitre of blood, the same as many other European countries but stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8 mg/ml! Drivers above this limit could face anything from a severe fine,
withdrawal of their licence, or even imprisonment.

It's said that this limit is equivalent to a glass of beer DEPENDING on the individual's metabolism so if you are on holiday in Mallorca and have hired a car, our advice is not to drink any alcohol
at all to ensure you are within the limits.
