For gastronauts like myself, it's happy hour all the time at the little gem Ca Na Chinchilla on the Rambla in central Palma. This bijou 'botiga-bar' is a five-for-one wine shop, delicatessen, bar,
restaurant and (occasional) live music venue all wrapped up under one small roof – though luckily it also has an outside terrace for relaxing on sunny days.
Small and friendly, its walls are lined with rack after rack of some of Mallorca's and Spain's great wines and its counter is bursting with cheeses, fabulous oils, specialist salt and other local
products. Its menu is simple, fresh products like fruit and vegetables and the best in smoked fish, sardines, cured hams, sausages cheese, paté and summer specials like gazpacho (photo).
Their house speciality is smoked llampuga (known elsewhere as mahi mahi or dolphin fish) which, when in season and freshly caught in Mallorcan waters makes a delicious summer dish when served with
lettuce, tomato, samphire, onion, salt, olive oil and Modena balsamic vinegar!
It's a an inviting, comfortable place whether inside or out and the food makes it even more sociable as the thinly sliced ham and sausages are great for sharing between friends at the table with a
good choice of wines by the glass or the bottle. And the Chinchillas certainly know their stuff when it comes to wine, as they regularly host 'catas,' wine tastings where expert advice and
knowledge is given about the wines there.
Being in the city centre, it's an ideal place for a pit stop during shopping or for a quick bite to eat before the theatre (just round the corner) or as I do, pop in for a quick aperitif of Aperol
and Cava -a la Spritz in Venice – before I dine out.
Give it a try, they're nice, friendly people with a really good product.
