If you're staying in Palma then a few minutes stroll along the seafront promenade will bring you to another world. Portixol, with its small harbour for fishing and pleasure craft, and nearby El Molinar are like a breath of fresh air, fresh sea air that is.
This old area, full of colourful old cottages and with a small sandy beach, is now tres chic, with laid back restaurants and bars springing up to join older, traditional establishments as the area becomes more and more popular.
Dominating the former fishing area of Portixol harbour is the Portixol Hotel, Scandinavian owned and combining the best of the Med; colours, food, ambiance, with simple northern European style.
This theme follows through into the restaurant and sea side terrace which has been a popular eating and meeting destination since 1956! Now transformed for a new generation, it offers a fabulous 3 course 'Seaside Lunch' which changes every week, for only €19, which when you take into account the quality of the food, wine (not included in the price,) view, ambiance and service, is quite reasonable.
Sitting on the terrace in the sunshine or shade and with beautiful sea breezes wafting in from nearby is an absolute pleasure and made even more so by the cuisine which is light, flavoursome and simple yet well presented. It's one of my favourite places to lunch in Mallorca when I have the time to really appreciate it – and strolling back into the city centre is so easy from here!
