The country may still be in the grips of recession but the urban/boutique hotel sector in Palma de Mallorca continues to boom. Only this week the city council has looked favourably on plans to convert one of the lovely old buildings on the Plaza Sant Francesc into a luxury 43 room hotel and plans are also on the table to convert one of the grand buildings in Calle Sant Joan (the same street where the famous Abaco bar is) into an 18 room hotel with a large restaurant.
This, despite the murmurings of neighbours groups in the vicinity, is extremely good news for Palma as not only do these hotels preserve the architectural heritage of the city by converting buildings which otherwise may remain unused, but they also bring employment and income into the city by attracting a wealthy, sophisticated clientele whose acquisitive powers are felt in restaurants, shops and bars throughout the whole year.
At present there are no less than 52 Urban hotels in Palma, of which 14% have 5 stars and 52% 4 stars. To me the very word 'urban' suggests cool, stylish, modern and sophisticated so I picked out just a few hotels with different price ranges and looks which occupy former houses, palaces etc and are ideal for a city break whatever the time of year.
I've stayed at the first two and would happily stay at the latter. Which do you prefer?
