We normally associate gin production with our sister island of Menorca thanks to the famous Xoriguer brand which capitalised on the massive presence of the patriotically alcohol soused British navy
a couple of hundred years ago! Now however, partly because of the fashion for really good gin and tonics in Spain, gin is being produced in Mallorca, albeit on a smaller scale.
Gin Eva (photos courtesy Facebook) has been a labour of love for a Spanish/German couple who moved to Mallorca a few years ago.
Stefan Winterling, whose family owned vineyards in the Pfalz region of Germany was training in Geisenheim when he met Eva Maier Gomez an agricultural engineer specialising in grape production who
was working there at the same time.
To be together Stefan found himself a job in the vineyards of Mallorca and in 2011 they bought a copper still to make small quantities of Gin in a small distillery in Llucmajor and named their
product Gin Eva. Unlike mass produced brews, Gin Eva is made entirely by hand as Stefan says that they wanted to impregnate the gin with the taste of Mallorca.
Many, but not all of the products are actually from the island, and the most important are the juniper berries from the sand dunes at one of Mallorca's most beautiful beaches,
"/beaches/es_trenc.htm">Es Trenc. They have a salt tang all of their own and are mixed with around 20 different 'botanicals' and pure water from the Sierra Tramuntana to give a distinctive
flavour to the finished product.
Included in the mix are; Coriander, Licorice, Hibiscus Flower, Cardamom, Angelica Root, Nutmeg, Rosemary, Fennel, Lavender, Ginger and the peel of citrus fruits like lemon, orange and grapefruit,
to name just a few. All this gives the gin a nose with aromas of lavender, citrus and of course juniper so characteristic of the drink.
According to the experts, “the palate is complex, spiced with character and strength. Creamy notes of vanilla appear and on the palate it is smooth, refreshing, slightly spicy with juniper
which always present until the end.”
Only small quantities are made per production run and each stylish bottle is individually filled and labelled with a hand-written number with the month and year of production, so it's like buying a
signed limited edition – which is great as a present for someone.
