Mallorca Then and Now

Way back in 1958 the world, and the island of Mallorca, were very different but had many similarities to today

Way back in 1958 the world, and the island of Mallorca, were very different but had many similarities to today. Real Madrid won the European Cup, but Spain didn't qualify for the World Cup, and
Manchester United lost many of their team in the Munich air disaster. The EEC was founded, Eisenhower is President of the USA, Khrushchev is head of state in the USSR, de Gaulle becomes President
of France, John XXIII becomes Pope and Elvis is conscripted into the army!

Meanwhile back in Mallorca, the sun is out, and people are flocking to the beaches and clear blue seas to enjoy the peace, quiet and tranquillity of the island. As the commentary from this short
video from that year demonstrates, tourists were already coming to Mallorca for its beautiful landscape, crystal clear waters, fine sand and opportunities to practice water sports – which can all
still be found today.

Already the hotel 'industry' was beginning to grow and you can see the Hotel Acapulco in Playa de Palma looking almost as it does today from the outside yet suspiciously closer to the water's edge
than it is now – I imagine the seafront paseo was reclaimed from the sea when it was constructed. Take a look at how it looks now – "http://www.booking.com/hotel/es/grupotel-acapulco-playa.en-gb.html?aid=319293">Acapulco 2014.

There's a certain innocence, simplicity and nostalgia about this video's portrayal of holidays in the past, which despite the arrival of brash neon-lit modern resorts with discos, karaoke bars and
fast food joints, can still be found in unspoilt beaches and many small towns and villages inland.
