Palma's galleries throw open their doors Nuit Blanche style
For the 17th year in succession Palma celebrates a night time opening of dozens of its galleries in the style of Paris Nuit Blanche. Thousands of people take to the streets to enjoy an evening of
style, culture, art and entertainment in the shops, bars, restaurants and galleries – public, private and ad hoc – of the city.
It all happens on Thursday, 18th September when, as the sun goes down the big museums and galleries like Es Baluard, Casal Solleric and the Caixaforum and a myriad of private galleries all over the
fascinating old town area of Palma open up their exhibitions of painting, photography and sculpture all for free.
Along with this, the shops are open later, there is live music and entertainment in the streets and many public spaces feature works of art along the routes between galleries. As you can see from
the video of one of the past years, it's a really popular, civilised event which draws the crowds to the city after dark.
Last year I featured an article about Gilbert and George's London Pictures exhibition which was the main draw of last
year's Nit de l'Art, so it was an exciting moment for me personally, when passing the Casal Solleric at the dead of night, that I saw them, sitting in identical chairs and identical suits in the
doorway! It looks like I got some fashion tips from them when the paps snapped me in the exhibition itself.
