Hot Jazz on hot August nights in Sa Pobla
The small town of Sa Pobla host some big jazz sounds in its 20th annual jazz festival early next month. You'll be able to hear some of the top sounds of the genre from players on the national and
international scene in the main square, the Plaza Mayor, from 5th to 9th August.
Despite the adverse economic climate the festival goes ahead once again thanks to sponsorship from local businesses and organisations and the festival organisers are asking for a contribution of €4
– a pittance in comparison to the quality of performances in store!
To keep costs down, the festival runs on 5 consecutive nights with a comfortable start time of 22.30 when the heat of the day starts to disperse in preparation for a jazz drenched night.
So, who's on?
5th – American saxophonist David Murray with his quartet
6th – Menorcan pianist Marco Mequida with his trio
7th – Freddy Cole, 83-year-old American pianist who sings a mean jazz standard
8th – My favourites, Mallorca's funkiest jazzers (or is it jazziest funksters) Orange Juice Funk Collective (video)
9th – Perenial Sa Pobla performers, Jimmy Weinstein's travelling big band close the show as usual.
A nice variety of styles and sounds there, so something for everybody. If you're staying up in the resorts all along the bay of Alcudia, Sa Pobla's an easy trip in your hire car, and at €4 it
isn't going to break the bank to get in.
See you there?
