A three day fest of tapas, beer and fantastic fish on the east coast
The lovely little resort of Cala Ratjada on Mallorca's east coast is perhaps better known these days as a favourite holiday destination, but it is still a
working fishing port and at its busiest at this very moment. Why, because it's Llampuga season, and this delicious fish
is big business for the local fleet as it migrates through Mediterranean waters.
Llampuga, also known as Mahi Mahi, Dolphinfish and Dorado, can grow quite large and is great sport for anglers. For gastronauts it's interesting because its firm white meat is flavoursome and can
be cooked in all manner of ways – grilling, roasting, frying – and even eaten raw. Photo courtesy of Chefs(in)
So important is the Llampuga to the fishermen of Cala Ratjada that they have a festival in its honour every year where over 7,000 kilos of it is served up in a myriad ways to an eager public keen
to enjoy its full flavour.
This year is the 13th year on the trot that it's been held and there will be one or two differences to the organisation. Because of the recession and difficult financial times, Capdepera Council
have decided to fund the festival in its entirety so that every one of the 21 stalls set up around the port will be occupied by hotels, restaurants and the fishermen's union. In addition, no entry
fee will be charged to the public, so we'll only have to pay for what we eat and drink, which will all be at economic prices!
It's great fun, there's a brilliant, friendly atmosphere throughout the day and evening as people eat, chat and watch the cooking demonstrations with a glass of cold beer or chilled wine. But it
gets better because the fish fest is just one part of a three day gastro bonanza for the resort!
The important dates for your diary are
