An entertaining day given over to old traditions and the craft of embroidery
The charming village of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, over near Mallorca's east coast resorts of Cala Millor and Sa Coma, steps back in time tomorrow, Sunday
16th November when it hosts a whole day dedicated to the old craft of embroidery.
A typical cottage industry, the dexterous ladies of the village would make beautifully embroidered material to be used around the home and as traditional clothing which can still be seen today in
the outfits of Mallorca's folk dancers and more contemporarily, in the Ad Lib fashions designed in Ibiza.
The lovely area around the church square which as you can see from my photo, looks unchanged (apart from that Ford Escort parked up) from 100 years ago, is where all the action takes place. The
best of Mallorca's embroiderers will be showing just how their intricate work is done along with displays of old singer sewing machines and other tools of the trade.
The day starts at 11 with some traditional folk music and dancing, at 15.30 there's a fashion parade of country clothing, vintage clothes, and bang up to date, fashion from Ibiza! Throughout the
day there'll be stalls selling local products, patchwork and straw basket and hat weavers as well as some delicious local sweets and almond products on sale. Everything comes to a close at 17 when
there's folk folk music and dancing where everyone can join in.....
Even if you're not that interested in local craftwork, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar is worth a visit at anytime of the year with its attractive church square, a burbling fountain, a traditional
old 'wash house' and attractive cottages in the narrow streets of the centre.
My photo of the embroiderers at work comes from a Facebook page of old photos of the town
– have a look.
