Mallorca takes gastro TV by storm
Like many other countries around the world, Spain is gripped by weekly episodes of cooking competitions like Masterchef and Top Chef shown at prime time on TV. It's a measure of how important
gastronomy is becoming in our lives and thanks to two young Mallorquin women, how important it is to the tourist business of the island.
Just a few weeks ago, Victoria Pulgarín, known to one and all as Vicky, triumphed in Masterchef and won €100,000 to open her own restaurant. Since then the unemployed butcher has become the toast
of Mallorca, making lots of public appearances and giving demonstrations of her skills.
This week, the Top Chef programme whittled down its first 16 contestants to the 12 who will take part in the competition proper and amongst them is Marta Rosselló (photo) from her Sal de Cocó
restaurant in Colonia Sant Jordi near to the famous Es Trenc beach.
Run by celebrity chef Alberto Chicote, famous in Spain for fusing traditional Spanish and modern Asian cuisine and also presenter of the 'Kitchen Nightmares' show, Top Chef is a competition for
professionals from some of the country's top restaurants.
Marta's still only in her 20's and, trained in Mallorca, uses many ingredients from the island, especially the natural sea salt in her restaurant's dishes (photo.) One of the Chefs(in) members, she
takes part in many of their events and gastro-promotions like Peccata Minuta, around the island and is an important part of the family team which runs the restaurant. She's not only the chef, but
also her grandfather's assistant on board his small Llaut, a traditional fishing boat, which is used to catch many of the fish for Sal de Coco's culinary creations!
Sal de Coco is at C/ Es Carreró, 47 Colònia de Sant Jordi, tel 971 65 52 25 but at the moment is closed on Mondays as that's
when Marta is on Top Chef!
