A cornucopia of simple yet delicious food and drink in the old town
Nestled on a corner of the historic old walled town of Alcudia you'll find a cornucopia of traditional Mallorcan food and drink which is both a shop and a bar called Sa Cisterna. Easy to find, it's just off the shop filled main street of the 'casco antiguo' (old town centre) walking up from the fortified, castle-like Puerta Xara gate towards the town hall.
Look out for the old well on the left and you've arrived at this shop and bar which is a temple to all things good, simple, tasty and refreshing about Mallorcan food and cuisine. Not only does it stock probably everything produced on the island, but it also serves it up in hearty, mouthwatering dishes ideal for a lunch between friends.
On the packed shelves of the shop and bodega you'll find simply the best of gastro Mallorca;
Sausages – Sobrasada, made from black pork reared in Mallorca.
Extra virgen olive oil – made from Mallorquina, Arbequina y Picual olives grown and processed on the island.
Wines and liqueurs – over 130 different brews from all the major bodegas in Mallorca and other Balearic Islands and local liqueurs Palo, Hierbas and the famous gin of Menorca.
And to accompany any meal, there are olives, salt, honey, jam, pate, almonds and rice – all 100% Mallorquin, as well as the best cheese from Menorca.
And most importantly, Sa Cisterna has a great selection of craft and world beers which add that little extra frisson to a plate of cold meat, cheese, olives, peppers, and so on, on a hot or cold afternoon.
No wonder the "Establiment D'OR" sign is proudly displayed here. It shows that the products on sale are all high quality and you only need to look at that wonderful photo of a cold platter to see that they are. Looks delicious doesn't it.
Give them a try, they're at c/Cisterna 1 in Alcudia and it's the perfect place to go for provisions if you're staying in a villa or apartment in the area!
