Mallorca rural tourism

An escape to tranquillity from life's busy routines

A recent report from Spain's national Statistics Office puts the Balearic Islands in third place, just behind Castilla y Leon and Catalonia, in figures for rural tourism. Whilst for many people the image of Mallorca is sun, sea and sand holidays, the island of course offers so much more, and rural tourism is just one of those aspects.

Whilst beach tourism is well catered for with large hotels turning over punters on an industrial scale throughout the summer months, rural tourism tends to attract a different type of clientele. The rural hotel owners association says that its clients tend to be in the higher salary bracket, usually professional families or couples looking for quality, peace, tranquillity and with an interest in Mallorca; its customs, gastronomy, local products and environment.

For clients who want to disconnect from their busy daily routines and take advantage of all that Mallorca has to offer throughout the whole 12 months of the year, there's a wide choice of 'rural' accommodation. They can stay on agrotourism farms which produce their own ecological foodstuff, small hotels overlooking the sea, or hostals in the mountains or rolling countryside, where because of their small size, personal service is guaranteed.

One of the big draws of Mallorca is the World Heritage Site of the Tramuntana Mountains, and with a pin, I picked out this charming little hotel overlooking the cliffs at Banyalbufar. The Hotel d’Interior Ca Mado Paula is a restored 19th-century stately home (photo above) with original stone walls, wooden beams, simple, elegant decor and great sea views from its garden terrace. What a great place it looks for a relaxing break, and the word is that the G&T's are something special!

agrotourism perola

Food lovers may want to spend some time on the adults only Agroturisme Perola's organic farm in the rolling Mallorcan countryside in the centre of the island. All the food there - organic meat, fresh Mediterranean fruits, vegetables and homemade jams - is produced on site. With country style decor and a lovely pool to lounge by in the hot summer months, it's the perfect get away from it all retreat.
