Great food, cocktails, showcooking and events all under one roof
The super new Gastromarket San Juan that we heralded a couple of months ago is now open and by all accounts doing very well. As predicted, it opened in June with agreat opening bash, just in time for the fiesta of San Juan, and has been drawing in the punters with a superb offer ever since.
The developers have created a magnificent space, a central food hall with gourmet outlets around it, housed in what was once a brewery on the site of the architecturally splendid Palma city slaughterhouse. Modernised but retaining all the wonderfull fixtures and fittings of the early 20th century – just look at those tiles – you can still see the enormous beer barrels and stills used for brewing.
The food hall has 17 different stalls selling top class cuisine – some simple and local, others from farther afield – where you can choose a variety of dishes and eat them rather gregariously, standing, sitting, perching on stools with your friends and family. You can snack and pick on fried fish, Thai, seafood pasta, Japanese, fresh pasta and pizza, rice dishes, burgers, Basque pinchos, cured hams, grilled meat, and sandwiches – something for everybody there then!
In the daytime, there's a big terrace with plenty of parasol shade and the coolest piece of lounging furniture ever, Adirondack chairs dotted about – just imagine sitting back with an ice cold beer, glass of cava and a few olives as the sun goes over the yard arm. As the evening draws in, the focus switches to the rather cool cocktail bar and events like relaxing live music.
I had a virtual tour of the Mercado San Juan courtesy of their Facebook page, and I must say, I'm very impressed with the photos and style of the place. I can't wait to visit in real life, what about you?
Going? It's open Sunday to Thursday 10 to midnight, and until 2 in the morning on Friday and Saturday!
