Thousands of people run through the streets of Bunyola in their underwear
One of Spain's most unusual fiestas takes place in Mallorca this month when the little town of Bunyola, gateway to the Tramuntana mountains celebrates the feast of Sant Mateo. Nothing strange about that, it's a fiesta celebrated in many other parts of the country, but what is unusual about Bunyola's party is that nearly everybody gets their kit off.
For some reason, some bright spark came up with the idea of having a race where the competitors ran wearing only their underwear. It was a roaring success and over the last ten years has grown and grown and grown. Nowadays, what seems like thousands of people take part, stretching the definition of underwear to the limits with some amazing creations and fancy dress appearing.
This year the event will take place on Sunday, 20th September at 19:00 in the centre of town. Don't worry if you're unsure of the direction, just follow the scantily clad crowds and join in with the fun – there are plenty of food and drink pit-stops along the way, music, dancing and not really a lot of running. Rumour has it that there'll be tangas aplenty, though the drawback is that it's mostly big burly blokes wearing them!
I think it's a great idea, and definitely worth a visit, if you're in Mallorca at the time. What a shame it's a celebration of St Matthew's day, when perhaps an underwear run would be more suited to St Michael!
