The very best of classical music, pop, jazz and folk
The 2015 Mallorca Music Festival brings us five fantastic concerts in Palma's Teatro Principal on Saturday evenings this October and November. Under the artistic and general direction of Toyo Masanori Tanaka, the festival will feature fine soloists, singers, orchestras and choirs not only from Mallorca, but also from all over the world.
The programme is classically based with opera and chamber music at the forefront but also highlights some of the best music from pop, folk and jazz performed by a big cast which fills the stage. The theatre itself, which is quite intimate and lined with boxes for just 6 people each, is a really charming venue with excellent acoustics and makes for a great introduction to this type of concert.
So, what's in store for us on Saturday evenings in Palma at the concerts which all start at 19:00?
10th October – Opera Gala – Viva l'Opera, with works from Verdi, Gounod, Delibes, Donizetti, Puccini and Bizet's Carmen performed by the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra, choir and soloists from all over the world.
17th October – Chamber music – The Sound of the Soul, with music by Bellini, Schubert, and Chopin.
24th October – Grand Rossini Concert, with arias, duets, quartets and his Messa di Gloria performed by the Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra and soloists.
31st October – Live in Concert – The Magic Violins, from classics to pop with music from Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Budapest, London, New York and Hollywood! All played by the Vienna Rondo Orchestra and a host of soloists.
7th November – Live in Concert – The Sound of World Music, rhythms without frontiers from classics to jazz to pop to folk by the Jacaranda Ensemble composed of musicians from the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Having experienced the wonderful atmosphere in the theatre myself, I can really recommend taking in one of these concerts if you're in Palma. The price is really good value for money with tickets starting at only €20 and then €30, €45 and €55 for the best seats. You can buy tickets online by clicking this link – Mallorca Music Festival – and if you do go, don't forget that with a 19:00 start the concerts are over well before the pubs close!
