Delicious, tasty, wild mushrooms to buy and eat in Mallorca
Did you know that there are around 1200 different kinds of wild mushrooms that spring up every year in Mallorca when the weather becomes a bit damper in autumn? Unfortunately only about 150 of them are edible and the rest can affect your mind and body with hallucinations, stomach upsets and in some cases death!
As we don't want to keep you in the dark about which to eat and which to run away from, let's tell you about a fantastic two day event taking place in the picturesque little town of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, over in the east of Mallorca. It's the second annual mushroom gastronomic market on the 21st and 22nd November, held around the town's old railway station, now on the Via Verde eco-leisure trail.
The first day of the market is designed for those who really want to learn about these fleshy fungi with a mushroom hunt/expedition led by an expert who will explain how to select the mushrooms – basically so you don't die – followed by a slap up meal in the Taronja Negre restaurant in town cooked up by top chef Tomeu Caldentey.
Sunday is the big day for the public from 10:00 to 18:00 with; surprise, surprise lots of market stalls selling more mushrooms than you could imagine. The gastro part of the day also starts at 10:00 when 10 top chefs - Rafel Perelló from the Hotel Son Brull, Andrés Benítez from Es Molí de'n Bou, and Miquel Gelabert from Can March Restaurant, to name just three – will be giving displays of show cooking and then putting their expertly made gourmet tapas on sale.
Another highlight will be a fun 'Mushroom Masterchef' competition hosted by Koldo Royo from 11:30 to 13:30 when 20 hopefuls will slug it out to be crowned as the best chef. Koldo will also be appearing in his other job as food truck owner (photo) as a gastro-convoy of moving feasts pulls into town for our delectation. Throughout the day kids' activities on a mushroom theme – don't ask me – and musical entertainment will be taking place, so all in all, a good day for all.
Whoops, almost forgot, Cordoniu are laying on lashings of Cava!
