Earth Hour Mallorca

The lights will go out in Palma for Earth Hour

On Saturday millions of people all over the world will switch off their electric lights to demonstrate their solidarity with our fragile planet. It's the WWF's Earth Hour – Hora del Planeta in Spanish speaking countries – and takes place everywhere from 20:30 till 21:30, exactly one hour, on Saturday 19th March.

Obviously it's completely in the hands of individuals to switch off the power, but the big local authorities and government bodies all over Mallorca will be joining in by cutting the supply of electricity to some of the island's most emblematic buildings.

almudaina palace, palma

Here in Palma no less than four authorities will be demonstrating their commitment to arresting climate change and in favour of sustainability and energy efficiency by blacking out some of the city's most beautiful public buildings.

Palma council will leave the cathedral, Bellver Castle and the town hall in darkness; the Consell will turn off the Almudaina and Misercordia; and the Balearic Government with throw the switch on the Lonja. Even the airport will participate, though only the facade of the terminal building will be blacked out by AENA, the national airports authority.

It's a nice symbolic gesture to make, and if you're in Palma, hit the streets during and after the big switch off and you'll see just how spectacular these monumental buildings are by night as my photo of the Almudaina palace demonstrates.
