Palma eateries: La Rosa Vermutería

A retro styled bar and restaurant that's bang on trend

La Rosa Vermuteria has certainly captured the imagination of the public, both locals and visitors alike, since it opened in 2015. A mix of excellent food, retro décor and the magic ingredient – vermouth - have made La Rosa one of Palma's go to eateries by day or night.

It's not that long ago that designer gin and tonics were the oh so fashionable drink of choice of the young and upwardly mobile Spanish. Now gin's in the bin and vermouth is the aperitif that we all crave, a return to a time decades ago when people would enjoy 'la hora del vermut,' a vermouth with a few nibbles before lunch or dinner.

Now vermouth bars – vermuterias – are springing up all over Spain and particularly in the big cities like Madrid and trend conscious Barcelona. Here in Palma bars need to have a little more substance than mere trendiness to succeed and so it is with La Rosa – the food is fantastic!

It's that ideal mix of tapas bar and restaurant with a standing and stool area for vermutistas and nibblers, and a more formal area for dining. With a décor that harks back to the 50's there's a nostalgic feel to the whole space and even the food appears to have been prepared by your grandmother – with the caveat that there are unmistakable touches of the 21st century in both décor and dishes.

On a practical note La Rosa doesn't take bookings, which combined with its popularity for all the reasons above can mean queues to get in. I went on a Sunday evening in December and there was a queue for the queue but everybody inside seemed to be enjoying their food and drink with gusto.

It's tucked down a little side street just off the Plaza Weyler in Palma and is well worth a visit just to sample some of the many vermouths on sale, both from the bottle and on tap. However if you can spare the time for lunch or dinner – just take a look at our photo gallery – do so, because the food and service are really good.
