Hop off and on at the San Juan gastro market
Regular readers will know all about Palma's big Mercado Gastromico San Juan and the city's Sight Seeing tour bus from previous articles, and now the two have come together on the hop on, hop off route round Mallorca's capital.
Ever aware of the wants and demands of tourists to the city, the Sight Seeing bus tour has added a new stop on its route – making a total of 18 in all – as it pulls into the San Juan Gastro Market. Opened just over a year ago, the market's buildings are a tourist attraction in themselves – it's the old Palma abatoir, designed in splendid Modernist style by the famous architect Gaspar Bennàssar in 1905.
Now it's become one of Palma's must sees as it currently houses a gastro-lifestyle concept; a central food court surrounded by food outlets with world cuisine which promotes friendly, social dining along with live music, art and events. The retro décor is superb, the food is good and plentiful, the atmosphere buzzing and friendly and the music is relaxing – what's not to like?
A little out of the centre, San Juan may have proved a little difficult to find for short term visitors to Palma, but now with the ability to hop on, and hop off the bus as many times as they want during 24 hours, visitors can either pop in for a tapa or two during the tour to orient themselves for a visit under their own steam later.
It looks like everyone will benefit from this new alliance. The bus runs from 09:30 until 20:00 everyday, visiting all the major sights of the city in an 80 minute guided tour in 8 languages. With a bus every 20 minutes and a ticket costing only €21 (discounts for kids) for 24 hours, it's well worth the money. You can book online or at one of the stops dotted around Palma.
