Gruelling curtain raiser to the cycling season
The Mallorca cycling challenge takes place once again next week for the 26th time and is now firmly established as one of Spain's most important races and an ideal opportunity for some of the top teams to blow the cobwebs of winter away with a run out on the island.
It's normally around here where I wax lyrical about the perfect winter climate that Mallorca enjoys as well as its testing runs over long flat areas and lung bursting, vertiginous mountain routes. Well the flats and steeps are still here, but as you can see from our photos (courtesy of the Team Sky webpage) the snow earlier this week didn't make for ideal training conditions!
Once again, because of the prestige of the race, the Challenge has attracted teams from all over the world, 20 in all which include 4 UCI teams, the German, British and Spanish national selections and teams from Ukraine, Bolivia, Kuwait and all the usual European countries.
The riders, including some of the world's best, will take part in four races over four days;
26th January - TROFEO PORRERES – FELANITX – SES SALINES – CAMPOS, 167 km
27th January - TROFEO SERRA DE TRAMUNTANA (SOLLER – DEIÀ) 139 km
28th January - TROFEO ANDRATX – MIRADOR DES COLOMER (POLLENÇA) 158 km
29th January - TROFEO PLAYA DE PALMA – PALMA, 165 km
You can get all the details of the times, routes, and riders on the Challenge Mallorca website.
Why not go and have a look if you're around the area next week?
