Direct services from airport to resort
From this summer, the much needed and long awaited bus services direct from Palma airport to the main resorts will commence as island authorities have just announced that five new routes will be introduced from May until October.
The current transport plan for Mallorca was formulated 20 years ago when package tours were the main way of taking a holiday on the island. Your holiday included your flight, your hotel and transport to it from the airport, whereas nowadays the majority of us arrive on DIY holidays with everything booked separately.
To many of us, there's nothing more galling than paying more for a taxi to and from the airport, than we've paid for our flights! So, the Territory and Mobility department have come up with these five new direct services to make it cheaper for us to get to our hotel.
From May the airport will have direct links to;
Cala d'Or and Portopetro
Cala Millor and s'Illot
Puerto Alcudia, Playa de Muro and Can Picafort
Great isn't it. The details of the fares and timetables have not yet been released but we do know that the cost will be in line with current services in Mallorca, (around €5 at a rough guesstimate) and will run every 60 to 90 minutes. The buses themselves will be 60 seaters and have plenty of space for luggage.
Previous journeys to the resorts involved a trip into Palma to change at the intermodal station – I've done it myself – which is ok for one or two people travelling light, but not something you'd want to do with a family carrying tons of luggage and last year's li-los already inflated for the pool!
It's estimated that around 10% of airport passengers will use the service – so well over a million in the summer – and the only people who probably won't be so keen on the idea are the, ta-dah, taxi drivers!
