The kings of the road are back!
The sleek lines and curves of the fabulous yachts berthed in super duper sport harbour Puerto Portals – it was recently valued at a cool €51 million – play second fiddle to the equally sleek and curvy bodywork of a phalanx of classic cars this week as the Oris Classic Car Rally comes to town.
It's year 13 of this annual spring event which sees around a hundred beautiful motors lined up on show for us all to ogle at, and competing on some of Mallorca's long and winding roads. The routes that the cars will compete on are based mainly in the Tramuntana mountain area of the island from Calvia and Andratx in the south up to to Pollenca and Lluc in the north which of course means that the infamous Sa Calobra road with its tight hairpin bends, is included.
Taking part will be some of the most famous marques in motoring, the ones that give you goosebumps just hearing them; Porsche, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, MGB and Morgan, aided and abetted by the odd Cooper and Cosworth! IBM you want to see them in action you can find all the details of the routes, drivers, cars, and more importantly safety measures for spectators on the official website.
However the easiest way to see the cars close up is as they start and finish at Puerto Portals;
9th March – start 19:00, finish 20:30
10th March – start 08:30, finish 17:45
11th March – start 08:30, finish 17:30
There are plenty of other activities going on at Puerto Portals – already stuffed with upscale bars, restaurants and shops - at the same time. You'll find a fantastic Scalextric model racing circuit all laid out for thrills spills and the smell of burning electricity we all loved as kids. Former Mods will love the exhibition of Vespas and Lambrettas on Saturday from 11 to 13 and there's also a Bultaco Lifestyle test driving setup to hone your skills!
Will we see you there?
