New bike lane from Soller to the port
Great news for anyone who fancies hiring a bike to tootle about the Soller area. The Consell of Mallorca are going to create a bike lane along the road which links the town of Soller to the resort of Puerto de Soller which will make cycling much safer.
The road is, as you can imagine, quite busy with 7,500 cars per day driving up and down it which can be quite daunting for inexperienced cyclists. Here, I mean those of us who fancy hiring a normal two wheeler to get about the area without powering up precipitous cliff faces or getting knee deep in canyons like the lycra clad pros do.
The new bike lanes will run for 4 km both in a special lane in the road and sharing a widened pavement with pedestrians and will cost about half a million Euros to complete. The great thing about it is that there aren't any steep gradients on the route as it is the one the tram takes so people like me, and the families that love Puerto de Soller so much, can easily get about.
Like most silver linings, there is a black cloud on the horizon. Part of the bike lane route will cut through the on road parking spaces, and the Soller council are already predicting parking problems when the tunnel to the area becomes toll free later in the year.
You can hire bikes – from super duper mountain bikes to basic road bikes for adults and kids – in both Soller and the Port from Tramuntana Tours who have shops (photo) in both places. They also organise lots of sporting activities as well as biking; hiking, boats, kayaks, fishing, canyoning and more. Mention Mallorca Spotlight if you call in or contact them online.
