Carmen in Palma

Bizet's classic in dance

carmen in dance

For two days only in June, the Spanish Compania Nacional de Danza (CND) bring their production of Bizet's Carmen to Mallorca. Palma's Teatro Principal is the venue for the production on 10th and 11th June when tickets cost an extremely reasonable €10 to €45 and can be bought online here.

What you get for your money is the breathtaking music from Bizet's opera but without the singing. Instead, the tragic tale of a fiery gypsy girl who works in the Seville tobacco factory and Don Jose, a naïve soldier who falls under her spell is told through dance.

Swedish choreographer Johan Inger has removed the geographical and temporal limits of the production so that the story could be set in any time period in any place, though the costumes have a 60's West Side Story look to them.

I've only glimpsed snippets of the production but as you would expect with a company of this stature, the dancing is spellbindingly superb and with the addition of the full Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra it's a spectacle not to be missed, particularly at those prices!
