Green bikes Mallorca

Safe, environmentally friendly cycling for all

view from mallorca's via verde

What could be better than seeing the beautiful Mallorcan countryside wend its slow way past you sitting tall in the saddle on safe, traffic free paths? Not a lot if you fancy getting out into the clear fresh air, on a fairly easy route suited to all comers that meanders for 30 km across the mostly flat plains in the east of the island from Manacor to Arta.

You may remember my articles about the construction of the Via Verdes in Mallorca – part of a national network all over Spain – which were formerly railway tracks, but latterly unused. The idea was to construct green ways, linear parks if you like, fenced to be safe for users and highlighting the environment, flora, fauna and interesting architecture and monuments along the way.

Now up and running, the Via Verde is tremendously popular with joggers, cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Thanks to a local company called bicisverdes (green bikes) you can now hire a bike to ride the green way and get the benefit of the local knowledge of the team who can point you in the direction of some stunning virgin beaches, fantastic pit-stops at bars and restaurants, and even pick you up at the end of a long day in the saddle.

They've got comfortable looking 'sit-up-and-beg' bikes for all age groups, even some electric ones, at prices – €15 a bike all day – that won't break the bank, and they also supply helmets, locks and child seats if you need them.

If you watch the video you'll see just how lovely the countryside is in that area and some of the sights along the way – I love the old station buildings myself.

Here's bicisverdes' website where you can book your trip online and see some of the great photos (like the one above) of the beautiful places you'll see along the way.
