Women's pre-Wimbledon warm up
Just a few years ago it would have been unthinkable that such an important competition as the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) pre-Wimbledon warm up tournament would be held in Mallorca. Back then the grass courts needed for such a tourney were few and far between and nothing like world class standard.
That all changed with the opening of the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club and its magnificent facilities for players and spectators alike. Not only does it have grass courts, but they're Wimbledon standard too so you can expect some of the world's finest ladies on court when the Mallorca Open Tennis Tournament takes place there from 18th to 25th June.
The biggest name on court belongs to the Amazonian Victoria Azarenka, currently number 6 in the world and a former number 1 who returns from a break in tennis whilst having a baby. She's sure to be a big draw, though whilst the biggest name, isn't the longest as Anastasia Pavlychenkova, the number 16 from Russia wins hands down.
As you can see from the photo, the tennis club has not only superb facilities, but also great views and well worth a trip to see the ladies in action. You can buy tickets online – which apart from the VIP packages range from around €30 to €50 depending on the day and the position – from the Mallorca Open website. It also has details of all the players and when the draw is made, the matches.
