Concha Buika free concert

Concha and the Balearic Symphony Orchestra

concha buika

Local girl made good Concha Buika returns to Palma as part of a world tour this month to give a free concert in the city's lovely Paseo del Borne square. Unfamiliar with her? Then let me explain with a brief bio. Born María Concepción Balboa Buika in Palma to parents who were political refugees from Equatorial Guinea in Africa, Concha was originally a drummer who decided to turn to singing as there wasn't much demand for female drummers.

Now based in Miami, her music – a fusion of Jazz, Flamenco, and Latin rhythms has received many awards and nominations and she has collaborated with some of the biggest names in world music; Anoushka Shankar, Chick Corea, Niño Josele, Chucho Valdes, Luz Casal, Nelly Furtado, and Charles Aznavour, to name just a few. Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar is one of her biggest fans and featured a couple of her songs in his film The Skin I Live In.

The concert on 21st June at 20:00 is completely free and is one of Concha's 'Sinfonic' series where she is accompanied by a full symphony orchestra, in this case the Balearic Symphony Orchestra. It's a great opportunity to see her in action with an enormous backing group, particularly as it is free, just before she jets off to the States and Canada on the rest of her tour.
