and no butts!
One of the biggest problems on Mallorca's lovely beaches is the presence of litter left by thoughtless beach users. Incredibly, perhaps the largest problem is caused by one of the smallest items – the cigarette butt. This small filter which is all that is left after a nicotine addict has filled their lungs with tar clogged smoke quite literally litters the litoral.
The butts are a two fold menace because their small size and weight makes it difficult for mechanical cleaners to remove them which increases the cost of cleaning enormously. Not only this but Butts are made from a petroleum derivative, are not biodegradable and can take up to 15 years to decompose in the sand. Each one can pollute up to 25 litres of water and have unpredictable consequences for plants and animals in the sea and coastline.
There's currently a campaign taking place in the Balearic Islands to rid our beaches of butts by encouraging smokers to use ashtrays and take their rubbish home with them at the end of the day and of volunteers to manually clean the butts from the beaches.
Organised by nomascolillasenelsuelo (no more butts on the floor) and several public bodies, the beach clean up comes to Calvia when the Es Carregador beach in Palmanova gets a makeover on Friday 18th August at 17:00 hours. Anyone can take part, all you need is your hands, some gloves and a big water carafe to hold the butts. You're only being asked for 30 minutes of your time so why not pop along and give a helping hand?
