Alcanada Golf seventh heaven

Voted best course in Europe

Mallorca's Club de Golf Alcanada has once again come out tops with visitors to golfing aficionados' website www.1golf.eu who voted it the best course in Europe this year. If that wasn't acclaim enough, then the fact that this is the seventh year on the trot that it's been voted number one is absolutely staggering, particularly when you consider that it only opened in 2003!

Voters in the poll came from 29 different countries who had a choice of over 28,000 courses in the running, so being number one for Alcanada truly is an honour to be proud of. I imagine that the actual planning of the course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, and its degree of difficulty played a major part in the voting, but looking at the photos, the landscape and magnificent views must have had some influence.

Situated on the coast near Alcudia, the club takes its name from the little island topped by a lighthouse just offshore which can be seen from most of the course. This together with stunning views of the mountains across the bay, the blue see dotted with the white flecks of distant vessels and the lush green natural vegetation on and around the course make it a pleasure to play.

Kristoff Both, the club's director, is justifiably proud of the award and said, ' We have one of the most scenic courses thanks to its amazing setting, and the views of the lighthouse is one of the most iconic in Mallorca. Add that to our wonderful course that offers a superb challenge to golfers of all standards then that is clearly a winning a combination.'

Continually striving to improve, the club has recently spent €250,000 upgrading its facilities including the introduction of TagMarshal software to speed up play, a contemporary yet traditional Spanish style stone halfway house called the Lighthouse Bar, with views of the lighthouse, which complements the already existing centuries old clubhouse with a first class restaurant.

It certainly seems like the place to go if you're a keen golfer. You can read more about it on its website - Club de Golf Alcanada – just click the link.
