It's true, Christmas seems to arrive earlier every year and here in Palma we'll commence the countdown for 25D on 23N as the Christmas lights will be switched on all around the city centre on the evening of 23rd November! Now whilst this may be quite late for Brits accustomed to starting Xmas in late September it's a bit of a world record here in Spain.
Significantly, the lighting up ceremony takes place on a very important date in the retail calendar, Black Friday Eve, so that everything will look festive for us as we dash around the shops the following day looking for bargains for Santa to deliver.
The ceremony will take place in the Paseo del Borne, Palma's beautiful tree lined central 'promenade' surrounded by some of the best shops in the city and dotted with the terraces of some very nice bars and restaurants. We've no idea yet who will actually be throwing the switch, but whoever it is, the end result is sure to be as magical as always.
I'm not one for Christmas but I do find the lights and atmosphere in the centre of Palma quite spellbinding and I've already booked myself and my wife (favourite film - Miracle on 34th Street) a night in town just to soak it all up. If you ever get the opportunity, do try to go as the pace is so much slower than say on the frenetic pavements of Regent Street.
My slideshow is from my phonecam from the last two years' illuminations – don't they look fantastic?
