The world cup of tennis
There's a lot of very positive speculation that Mallorca will host the next round of the Davis Cup – the world cup of tennis – after Spain's 3 – 1 win over Great Britain in Marbella. At the moment the competition to host the next round of the cup is between Mallorca and Valencia, with Mallorca as firm favourites.
Two factors seem to be influencing the bookies; the presence in the Spanish team of hometown boy Rafa Nadal who was absent in the win over GB because of injury but has declared himself available for the next round. The second major factor for the match against Germany is the large presence of away supporters in the large German community which lives on and visits Mallorca for holidays.
It's widely believed that for these very reasons sell out crowds would be guaranteed in the swish Calvia tennis installations where the WTA opener is played every year and would more than pay for the structure to cover the centre court if necessary.
Holding the Davis Cup would of course be a great fillip for the sport here, though it wouldn't be the first time as matches were held in Cala Ratjada in 1997 and Palma bullring in 2004. The organisers have until 19th of February to decide on the venue where the matches will be played from the 6th to 8th April.
