Refugee rescue boat visits

Astral, from Proactiva Open Arms

refugees

One of the boats that does such sterling humanitarian work rescuing refugees from their perilous journeys in the Mediterranean is paying a visit to Mallorca. The sailing ship Astral which belongs to the NGO Proactiva Open Arms based near Barcelona.

The boat has been involved in the rescue of over 15,000 men women and children in the eastern and central Mediterranean as they seek refuge from war, persecution and poverty. The visit to Mallorca's ports is to raise both awareness of the organisation's work and also funds to continue with it.

It's fairly common knowledge that the vast majority of these poor people end up on the shores of the Greek Islands and the south of Italy, but the problem is also nearer home as there are cases of small rafts from North Africa washing up on the shores of Mallorca and Ibiza!

The Astral will be berthed in; Palma (February 28), Puerto Portals Marina (March 6), Sóller (March 8), and Alcúdia (March 9) and will be open to visitors from 10.00 am to 1 pm and from 4.30 pm to 8 pm where an idea of the critical situation of these poor boat people can be gained.
