Takin' it to the bridge
The man responsible for some of the world's funkiest horn riffs pays a flying visit to Mallorca next week when he and his band play Manacor auditorium. Dateline is Funky Friday, 16th March, when his combo Fred Wesley and Generations bring the music back to Mallorca.
The band, so called because they span three generations of music, being in their 20's, 40's and 70's, consist of Fred on trombone, Leonardo Corradi on Hammond organ and Tony Match on drums. Originally they came together to pay tribute to legendary organist Jimmy Smith but have remained together ever since and are currently on the Spanish section of a European tour.
Even though Fred's getting on a bit, he still also tours with his other more funk based outfit, The New JB's, named of course after James Brown's backing band from the 70's. Wesley played in Brown's band with the likes of Bootsie Collins, Maceo Parker (who played Palma a few months ago) and Bobby Bird before leaving to join George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic funksters.
With a laid back jazzy funky feel, the Generations band kick off their performance at 20:30 on the 15th and tickets for the show start at a remarkable cheap €15! You can buy them online from the auditorium.
