A fascinating excursion o'er land and sea
I came across a fascinating excursion today which gives us the option to choose from a do-it-yourself trip or a guided tour with extra transport thrown in. Organised by Vallsoller Services it's a day's excursion to the magical area of Sa Calobra on Mallorca's west coast and Tramuntana mountain range.
Whichever version you choose you'll get to ride on the famous old Palma to Soller railway with its beautiful antique carriages and pass through some spectacular mountain scenery with giant orchards of citrus trees so close to the tracks that you could pull oranges off the trees as you pass. From Soller the little rickety old tram transports you down to the port in old carriages that once graced the streets of Palma and Lisbon 120 years ago.
Stopping right by the harbour, it's a stroll from the tram to the boat which takes you up the rugged coastline with rocks plunging precipitously into the clear blue waters from enormous heights. It's a fabulous ride (though it can occasionally be a tad choppy) made all the better by the sight of the rocks of Sa Calobra emerging from the sea, the small beach and the chasm of the Torrent de Pareis beyond.
As I said there are two options for the excursion;
The 'on your own' island tour – buy your package ticket for train, tram and boat excursion through the site and travel on any of the trains, trams and boats listed on the timetable. Tickets are a very reasonable €52 for adults and €26 for kids of 12 and up, under 12's go free. You can also park for free in the Son Sardina station just outside Palma.
The guided island tour – this includes coach transport from a point near to your hotel, the train tram and boat excursion and then a coach tour of the island with an on board guide back to the pick up point. The beauty of this trip is that you can choose to do it any way round; hotel-Sa Calobra-Puerto Soller-Soller-Palma-hotel or the reverse trip. This one's €57 for adults and €28.50 for 12 and overs.
It's a nice idea for a day out if you don't want the hassle of organising everything yourself, or if you need transport into Palma to catch the train.
Book it easily online of the Vallsoller Service website.
