Music in the museum
A couple of really hot July nights are guaranteed when Palma's Es Baluard museum stages the annual Mallorca Soul Weekend as part of its summer programme. The museum, a brilliant juxtaposition of ultra modern architecture and the old defencive walls and bastions of the city, is the perfect venue for open air concerts.
The setting for the gig is the central patio, an enclosed outdoor space which is used for all sorts of events from cocktail receptions to live performances and provides a startling backdrop with its ultra modern concrete and glass facades, works of art and ancient stone walls.
The dates for your diary if you fancy some great soul music are Friday 6th and Saturday 7th July with both nights kicking off at 20:00. Friday's lineup is Speedometer and Dr Gang playing live plus a DJ keeping things funky. On Saturday it's the turn of The Excitements and El Nino Alcalino and the Chuskers, again with a DJ!
You can buy tickets online in advance; €20 for both nights or €12 for just one night, or pay on the door €15.
If you're a real old soulie, you'll be interested in the two official pool parties as part of the weekend, held at Mallorca's soul themed hotel where the rooms feature bands from the old soul days like the Temps and the Four Tops and people like Tommy Hunt play live by the pool! The Hotel La Concha Soul in Peguera is the venue on the 5th and 8th July at 17:00 with Mallorca Black DJ's, BBQ, record fair, and projections.
Keep the faith!
