Cafe Can Balaguer

A cafe with a cause

Palma has another new cafe. Nothing unusual in that as there must be hundreds all over the city but this one is just a little different as it employs people young and old with intellectual disabilities.

Cafe Can Balaguer has just opened its rather substantial doors on the Calle Unio in the centre of Palma in the fabulous old building Can Balaguer which has just been restored to its majestic best after being neglected and unloved for years and years.

It's now owned by the council and is slowly taking from as a cultural centre, retaining many of its fabulous features and some amazing modern twists of architecture. It's worth going just to see what can be created from old buildings.

The council has given space over to the charitable organisation Amadip Esment (esment means care in Catalan) which has supported and helped people with intellectual disabilities since 1962. For the last 20 years they have been opening cafes staffed by their beneficiaries not only to raise funds but also to give meaningful employment to them.

Cafe Can Balaguer is their fourth establishment and follows the same mantra as all the others;

We try to offer a simple and clean food. We offer dishes that are reminiscent of the traditional and, as far as possible, we recover Mallorcan cuisine. It is healthy and its elaboration takes into account the details. We incorporate seasonal vegetables from our organic farming garden and quality raw materials.”

Can Balaguer doesn't have a kitchen so will feature a menu of salads, snacks, sandwiches, creams and desserts all pre-prepared from the other cafes and Amadip's bakery, with fresh coffee and organic wine on tap too. City workers in a rush will be able to grab any of the above as a takeaway but if you've got the time go in, sit down, smell the coffee and just take in the splendour of the surroundings!

It's open from 09:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 15:00 on Sundays and closed Monday at Calle Unio 3, next to C&A at the top of the Paseo del Borne.
