Bellver Castle concert
The famous concerts of the 90's starring the renowned Three Tenors; Carreras, Pavarotti, and Domingo, are revived in Palma next week with a concert in Bellver Castle in homage to the American composer Leonard Bernstein.
Entitled 'More of the Three Tenors' the concert stars José Manuel Sánchez, Joan Gabriel Riera, and Joan Laínez with a special guest appearance by a fourth tenor; Roger Berenguer. Perhaps it should have been called 'More than the Three Tenors?'
Now, you get a lot more for your money – tickets are €22 – at this concert because also on stage will be the massed choir of the Mallorca Gay Men's Chorus on back up vocals for the tenors. Their participation is particularly apt as one of the themes of the concert is to show support to the LGBTI collective in Mallorca.
The programme features some of the most famous works from opera and musicals from Verdi, Bizet and of course Nessan Dorma from Puccini's Turandot. The organisers say that the programme has been selected to emphasise some of the 'double meanings' in the works which give them an 'alternative' theme. Also on the list is 'I feel pretty' by Bernstein, a gay man who married a woman in more socially restricted times to enhance his career.
The concert itself sounds like a really good show, but when you add in the wonderful surroundings of the ancient venue, the circular interior 'patio' of the castle with magnificent illuminated arches and open to the starlit skies, the result is a fantastic experience.
It takes place next Thursday, 16th August at 20:30 and you can buy tickets online here.
