Vast reduction in traffic
The pilot scheme to ban traffic from the (once) extremely and chaotically busy road to the spectacularly beautiful area of the Formentor lighthouse has paid dividends.
The months of July and August saw the introduction of a ban on traffic along the road from 10:00 to 19:00 every day and the provision of a shuttle bus service from Puerto de Pollensa to run the route, calling at several beauty spots along the way.
It's just been announced that traffic on the road, which had reached dangerous levels because of its sheer volume and lack of parking, reduced by 78% during the trial period. Instead of the normal 4,750 vehicles per day, only 1,050 used the road, however this covers a 24 hour period when the traffic ban itself lasts only 9 hours!
The shuttle buses ran several services a day covering the busy morning and afternoon periods and sold over 69,000 tickets – a snip at €1.55 each way – to tourists wishing to visit the lighthouse and gaze upon the spectacular scenery as seen in our photo from the comfort of the bus.
Now that the busy season has finished, the authorities will take stock of the shuttle service to see if any teething problems can be ironed out and improvements made for the season to come.
